Civic Coalition MP Kinga Gajewska was detained by the police, dragged to a police van, and pushed inside the vehicle. The incident took place in the town of Otwock, near Warsaw, during Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki's meeting with voters. The situation was captured on TVN24 camera.
TVN24 reporter Jan Piotrowski was in Otwock when the incident took place. "When we arrived here, we saw an unusual situation. The Civic Platform MP Kinga Gajewska was being forcibly dragged towards a police van by a group of police officers," he said.
"I said through the megaphone that the Polish government has let 250,000 immigrants into Poland. Our visas were being sold at market stalls in Africa, and I just wanted Poles to know what happened," Gajewska told TVN24 right after she was released.
"I was detained. Everyone, the whole crowd were shouting that I'm an MP. ... The officers would not let me reach for my ID, as they grabbed both my hands, dragged me, and then forcibly shoved me into the van," she added.
The MP said one of the police officers had told her he did not like her behavior. "Luckily, the whole incident was also captured on police cameras - I informed the crowd a number of times that I was an MP. Unfortunately, as far as I know this PiS-run state, the recording will be simply deleted," she said.
Asked if she plans to take any steps with regards to the incident, Gajewska said she would first think about it.
"What would happen if it was somebody else? Such thing had already taken place before. At Women's March, MP Barbara Nowacka was sprayed in the face with tear gas. This is how they treat women, female MPs, and citizens."
Warsaw Police said the officers who had intervened against Gajewska "were not aware" she was a member of parliament and that she was released immediately after presenting her MP ID card.
Civic Platform leader Donald Tusk also posted a short video of the incident.
"The police detains MP Kinga Gajewska informing residents of Otwock about 250,000 migrants let in by PiS," he wrote in the post.
