Domenico F., a member of the world's most dangerous crime organisations 'Ndrangheta, has been detained by Polish police in Kraków. The swift operation was possible thanks to cooperation within ENFAST police network.
"In-mid November, Italian police carried out a large operation as a result of which over 100 most dangerous members of Italian mafia have been detained. The criminals resided not only in Italy, but also in other EU countries, including Poland," Polish Police spokesman Mariusz Ciarka said.
'Ndrangheta member Domenico F. detained in Kraków
Ciarka explained that the Italian police had determined that Domenico F., a member of 'Ndrangheta - one of the most dangerous crime syndicates in the world, could have been in Poland. "That's why the Italian police launched cooperation with an ENFAST contact point at Poland's National Police Headquarters in Warsaw," he added.
According to the investigation, the wanted man had connections in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, and could have resided in Kraków. Kraków Criminal Investigation Department was immediately put on the case, and so was the "headhunters" unit, specialised in locating most-wanted criminals. At first, the investigators determined that the suspect temporarily left Poland, Mariusz Ciarka said.
Stopped in a street, a few hours after returning
"Further cooperation within the ENFAST network, including real-time exchange of information, helped to determine that Domenico F. had entered Polish territory on Thursday morning," he informed. "A few hours later, in a swift operation, Kraków Criminal Investigation Department officers stopped the wanted man in his car in Kraków".
The spokesman added that a court would decide whether Domenico F. is extradited to Italy.
ENFAST is a European police network focused on searching for the most wanted criminals in Europe.
The 'Ndrangheta is a prominent Italian Mafia-type organized crime syndicate and criminal society based in the region of Calabria and dating back to the late 18th century. It is considered to be among the most powerful and dangerous organized crime groups in the world.
