Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said at a press briefing on Wednesday (November 16) that most likely Poland would not attempt to launch NATO Article 4 procedure, as there was no evidence justifying such move. He added, however, that "this instrument is still within our hands".
"Today I can say that most of the evidence we have collected at this point suggest that launching of NATO Article 4 might not be necessary on this escalation path this time, but this instrument is still within our hands," Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said at a press conference he held on Wednesday alongside President Andrzej Duda.
"Just like Mr President said, nothing suggests that it was an attack on the territory of Poland. Most likely we had witnessed a very unfortunate incident, because Polish citizens had been killed," the prime minister said.
PM Morawiecki said Polish authorities were in constant contact with allied services. "From there we also receive verification of the evidence materials collected by our services; border guards, Internal Security Agency already possess and analyse evidence materials, which we will soon use to draw conclusions," he said.
He added that collected evidence was being verified by American allies among others, so that "we could say we have certainty with regards to identifying the causes of what has happened".
In his view, the reaction of Poland's allies to that situation, including immediately called up NATO meeting in Brussels and president Duda's phone call with president Biden and others, "prove that we are in a very solid Alliance, which has worked".
The prime minister stressed that Tuesday had been a day of a mass missile attack on the territory of Ukraine. He added that some of the missiles fired by Russia had been shot down by the Ukrainian forces.
"A lot of things suggest, just like the American services inform and so does evidence collected by us, that one of these missiles - fired in a very unfortunate and tragic way - fell onto the Polish territory without any intention of any of the sides," he explained.
Morawiecki also said that, after the explosion in Przewodów, Polish military units, police, border guards, and other services were put into a state of emergency.
