Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Wednesday (March 2) that sanctions against Russia must be as far-reaching as possible in order to stop the Russian war machine.
Morawiecki mentioned that part of the sanctions package should be a blockade on various types of hydrocarbons from Russia – oil, gas and coal.
"I am calling once again for the European Commission to decide on an embargo on Russian coal. Poland immediately wants to stop importing Russian coal," Morawiecki said during a news conference before the meeting with European Council President Charles Michel not far from the frontier with Ukraine.
Morawiecki also spoke about the situation on the border, insisting that Poland helps all the people fleeing from war, regardless of the country of origin.
Stories claiming that Poland has been refusing entry to non-white refugees are untrue and Russian propaganda, Morawiecki said, adding: "Poland helps all the people fleeing from war, all the war refugees regardless of the country of origin. We are treating everybody with dignity and in an equal manner."
The European Commission on Wednesday proposed granting automatic temporary protection for up to three years to people fleeing war in Ukraine, including a residence permit and access to employment and social welfare.
European Union members Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary all have land borders with Ukraine and the Commission said that more than 650,000 people have fled there since Ukraine was invaded by Russia on February 24.
