The Sejm Rules and Deputies' Affairs Committee has recommended Supreme Audit Office (NIK) President Marian Banaś's immunity be lifted. The head of the committee Kazimierz Smoliński (PiS) informed that 9 deputies were in favour of the motion, and 7 were against.
On Wednesday morning the Sejm Rules and Deputies' Affairs Committee returned to examining a prosecutor's office's request to the Sejm to approve to hold the NIK president accountable for criminal offenses.
The investigators plan to present a dozen of charges against Banaś, including stating false information in asset declarations.
Banaś claims he is innocent and able to prove it.
"The committee has decided to approve the motion in a vote of 9 to 7" - Smoliński told reporters after the end of the closed part of the committee session.
He added that the case would now be referred to Speaker of the Sejm Elżbieta Witek and "the Sejm Presidium will decide on how to proceed with the motion".
The Sejm can only approve a bid to hold the NIK chief accountable for criminal offenses with an absolute majority of votes. Not meeting the threshold of the necessary majority means the motion has been rejected.
The NIK president took part in Tuesday's session of the committee. Upon leaving the meeting, he gave a statement in which he said that "for the last 2,5 years he has been a target of ruthless attacks by special services and media related to them". He added that "the issue of his immunity is a purely political case masterminded by the Law and Justice party leadership".
