Adam Glapiński took an official oath of office ahead of starting his second term as President of the National Bank of Poland. The ceremony sparked protests of opposition MPs. Civic Coalition deputy Klaudia Jachira threw "banknote confetti" out of the Sejm balcony, triggering an intervention by Marshal Guard officers. Left-wing MPs displayed banner saying "Glapiński must go" and "Monthly mortage payment +2350 zlotys".
President of the National Bank of Poland (NBP) Adam Glapiński took an oath of office on Wednesday in the Sejm, thus starting his second six-year term as central bank chief.
During Glapiński's oath-taking ceremony, Civic Coalition MP Klaudia Jachira threw banknote imitations out of the Sejm balcony. The speaker of the lower house Elżbieta Witek accused Jachira of undermining the authority of the chamber.
Jachira later told reporters she wanted her protest to be a symbol of consequences of excessive printing of money by the central bank.
"I won't accept the NBP chief swearing on the constitution only to violate it by printing additional 144 billion zlotys, leading to the highest inflation. He caused a mass-scale devaluation of money, what we all see doing our everyday shopping," she explained, adding that the happening was her on initiative.
Other opposition MPs, including the Left party deputies, held banner saying: ""Glapiński must go" and "Monthly mortage payment +2350 zlotys".
Leader of the Left parliamentary club Krzysztof Gawkowski said at a press conference later on that Adam Glapiński "is a man who caused the highest inflation in 24 years".
"Adam Glapiński ran away from the parliament like a coward (after being sworn-in), he wouldn't engage in a dialogue, he didn't want to talk at all, but most importantly, he wouldn't like to hear the truth about life in Poland," Gawkowski added.
President Andrzej Duda in January proposed Adam Glapiński be appointed for a second term as the NBP chief. The Sejm reappointed Glapiński in the first half of May.
Poland's central bank president is appointed by the Sejm for a 6-year term, with a maximum limit of two-terms. A candidate needs a qualified majority support in order to be approved.
Glapiński had appointed for his first term on June 10, 2016.
