On Wednesday in Jedlińsk near Radom, an ambulance overturned in an accident, leading to the tragic death of a paramedic from Białobrzegi Emergency Medical Service and the hospitalization of the ambulance driver. Colleagues shared their heartfelt tributes to the paramedic on social media.
According to Radom police, the accident occurred around 6 p.m. on Voivodeship Road 735. The initial investigation suggests that the ambulance, without a patient onboard, was traveling from Radom when it collided with a Peugeot coming from the opposite direction as it turned left. The impact caused the ambulance to overturn, killing the paramedic instantly. The driver was transported to the hospital.
Trained hundreds, saved thousands
Radom Emergency Medical Service identified the deceased paramedic as 34-year-old Piotr Miernecki, a member of Białobrzegi Emergency Medical Service and deputy head of the Polish Red Cross Volunteer Rescue Group in Kielce. Miernecki, also a nurse and instructor, was remembered fondly: "Our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues at SP ZOZ in Białobrzegi," the Radom EMS posted.
"Piotr worked for years within the structures of the Polish Red Cross, training numerous rescuers, teaching hundreds in first aid, and saving thousands. Piotr lost his life during his shift in an ambulance involved in the tragic accident in Jedlińsk near Radom. Piotr, we don’t say goodbye; we say see you later," the Polish Red Cross Rescue Group in Kielce said on social media.
"I am proud of each shift we shared"
A tribute from a local team of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP) in Kielce recalled Miernecki’s commitment to their cause, writing: "I remember that first final – Piotr was maybe 10 years old. He came, and he stayed with us for over 20 years, playing alongside WOŚP through every final. He was a valued and beloved person, a medical rescuer. He died on his way to help another person. The 33rd WOŚP final will never be the same without you, Piotr."
Jakub Wachnicki, a fellow paramedic, added: "I am proud of each shift we shared. Many people owe you their lives and health. I hope you're now flying that yellow helicopter above, doing what you love most – saving lives. It was an honor. I will never forget you."
At 2 p.m., fire stations across Poland sounded their sirens to honor Miernecki’s ultimate sacrifice. "Piotr Miernecki has gone on to eternal service, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to saving lives," stated the Polish State Fire Service. "This symbolic gesture reflects our unity and gratitude to those who risk their safety every day for the benefit of others."
