Representatives of New Left met with President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday (Oct. 25) to discuss the creation of a new government after the recent parliamentary election. "I think the president is growingly convinced that the opposition are cooperating with each other and that they are united over two fundamental declarations," one of the leaders of the left-wing alliance, Włodzimierz Czarzasty said after the meeting at the Presidential Palace.
Leaders of the New Left coalition held a press conference on Wednesday after the meeting with president Duda.
Frankly speaking, we haven't learned anything new. I think the president is growingly convinced that the opposition are cooperating with each other and that they are united over two fundamental declarations that we've all made," said Włodzimierz Czarzasty, currently serving as Deputy Speaker of the Sejm.
"Firstly, we're convinced the opposition should create a joint government, because it has a strong majority at the moment. Secondly, we've confirmed that we think Mr Donald Tusk should be nominated to form a new government," he added.
Magdalena Biejat said New Left was awaiting president's decision. "The president claimed he hadn't made this decisin yet, as of now we take at face value. We hope the president will not unnecessarily drag out this decision," she added.
Robert Biedroń said he believed president Duda would "respect the choice of those 75 percent of Poles who voted in these elections, who have given democratic opposition the mandate to form a government".
He assured the president had received a clear message regarding the opposition's standpoint. "We want to form a coalition, Donald Tusk is our candidate. Period. The president has clarity, the ball is in his court."
Biedroń announced the president would issue a statement regarding the consultations on Thursday. "It was communicated to us that the president will sum up all meetings tomorrow," he said.
Adrian Zandberg said it was "obvious that PiS will not create a government in Poland and it's good news it won't".
"It's not the right time to add another few weeks of political uncertainty. This is rather a time to finalize and agree the program of the new government, and to lay on it the foundation for the new government. That's what will be happening in the coming weeks. Mr President has heard this message from us," Zandberg added.
