Polish officials have seized two tonnes of cocaine from Colombia worth around 2 billion zlotys ($510 million), Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday.
"This was the biggest amount of drugs seized in the last 30 years," Morawiecki told a news conference, adding that the security forces have detained several suspects, including four Colombians, two Poles and one Iranian.
Morawiecki added that the drugs had been seized in an operation carried out by the Central Bureau of Police Investigations (CBŚP) and the National Revenue Administration (KAS).
"The state should always be one step ahead of criminals and, in this case, we have used the latest technology to detect and prevent the biggest smuggling in the history of the III Polish Republic," Morawiecki revealed.
The Minister of Interior Affairs and Administration Mariusz Kamiński stressed that the cocaine most likely had been meant to be distributed in Europe. "We may say that our officers saved Europe from being flooded with huge amounts of cocaine," he said.
Kamiński sees the operation as a huge success of Polish services. "It was in 100 percent a result of professionalism and dedication of our services: KAS and CBŚP. It proved just how important is the cooperation between services," the minister said.
