The National Council of the Judiciary (KRS) has begun hearings of candidates for the Supreme Court. The session is closed to the public - the KRS Bureau informed.
Polish Judges' Association "Iustitia" called on the National Council of the Judiciary on Monday to make the hearings of the candidates for the Supreme Court open and to transmit the sessions - the association wrote in a statement published on Twitter.
In the statement, "Iustitia" undescores that the appoinment of Supreme Court judges "is not a private issue" of both the candidates and the KRS members making the choice. "Applying for the top court, even through a illegitimate process such as the one that is currently ongoing, should be transparent and subject to public supervision," wrote the association. In their appeal, judges from "Iustitia" reminded also that the selection of jurors for the Supreme Court was open to public. According to them, "undoubtedly, it was a citizenship lesson for the Polish society".
The KRS Bureau informed, the session began with hearings of candidates for the newly formed Disciplinary Chamber and the Chamber of Extraordinary Supervision and Public Affairs. Most candidates placed their bids for these two chambers.
The KRS also said that the number of candidacies may change, as some of the bids have been sent by mail and still some time was needed to make the final count. Furthermore, the candidates have the right to withdraw their bids at any stage.
The deadline for submitting the applications passed on 29 July.
