TVN24 journalist and filmmaker Ewa Ewart has won the Prince Rainier III Special Prize on Tuesday (June 20) at the Monte Carlo Television Festival. Her documentary "Until the Last Drop" addresses the growing freshwater crisis, which is a universal challenge we are facing. The film was co-produced by TVN24.
Ewa Ewart won the award at Tuesday's ceremony held in Grimaldi Forum, Monte Carlo.
The Special Prize was established by Prince of Monaco Albert II to honour his father Prince Rainier III who had founded the festival. The accolade is awarded to the best documentary on environmental issues.
Ewa Ewart is a journalist and an award-winning filmmaker who specialises in groundbreaking and influential documentaries. Born and raised in Poland, she spent most of her career based at the BBC in London.
The Polish filmmaker has travelled and worked in many countries, producing and directing programmes ranging from investigations, political to social observational documentaries.
Her films have revealed new information about issues such as corruption in Boris Yeltsin’s Russia, secret prison camps in North Korea, civil war in Colombia, or secret and illegal CIA extraordinary rendition programme for people suspected of terrorism.
Ewart's documentaries told some of the most memorable stories like the tragedy in Beslan, made for the first anniversary of a terrorist attack in which more than 170 children had been killed. In her second film about Beslan, she highlighted the trauma still suffered by many child survivors five years after the atrocity.
For the last few years she has been the presenter of an international documentary strand on TVN24 and TVN24 BiS.
"Until the Last Drop"
Ewa Ewart's documentary "Until the Last Drop" addresses one of the biggest threats to human civilization - the growing freshwater crisis.
The film exposes the global cost and consequences of the destruction of nature "in the name of progress".
Rivers have been especially badly hit by the crisis. That is why the author decided to tell the stories of a number of world's rivers, including Poland's Oder River, Italy's Sarno, Vjosa River in Albania, and Canada's Magpie River.
The film was shot on location in Canada, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, Albania, and Poland.
The cinematography was done by Mateusz Kruszelnicki and Wiktor Strumiłło (drone shots). The film was co-produced by TVN24.
