Poland's distinguished journalist, columnist and sports commentator - Tomasz Wołek - has died at the age of 74. His family has confirmed the information about his passing to TOK FM radio, of which Wołek was a long-time associate.
Tomasz Wołek was a journalist, columnist, writer and sports commentator. He was born in 1974 in Gdańsk, where would go to schools and studied. In 1968, he took part in rallies organised as part of the so-called March events, and later - in 1980 - he joined Poland's first independent trade union - Solidarity. During the martial law period, Wołek wrote for Polish underground press and helped families of people interned by the communist regime.
Wołek was editor-in-chief of "Życie Warszawy" and also wrote for "Gazeta Wyborcza", "Rzeczpospolita" and "Polityka".
Tomasz Wołek was a regular guest commentator in TVN24's "Tak jest" programme as well as in Jacek Żakowski's morning talk in TOK FM radio.
He was an expert in football, especially South American.
In 2011, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, whereas in 1997 he had won Kisiel Prize.
