The representatives of the protesting fruit farmers submitted a petition in the Prime Minister's Chancellery in Warsaw. Among other things, they demand a reaction from the government to "drastically low prices of fruits".
Deputy Agriculture Minister Rafał Romanowski has gone outside the building to meet the farmers. He invited them for "table-talks" regarding cultivation contracts on 13 August.
The protest has been organised by the Fruit Farmers of Poland Association.
In the petition addressed to the Prime Minister, the fruit farmers demand, among other things, an effective counteracting of price policy of fruit-processing companies, a buy-out of 500.000 tonnes of apples for bioenergetic purposes, introducing cultivation contracts, as well as launching compensation for the farms affected by the low prices.
The Fruit Farmers of Poland Association says that the situation of fruit processing market is dramatic, as there is practically no variety for which decent money can be earned.
According to the Association, since the beginning of the season, the fruit-processing companies have been drastically and baselessly lowering fruit prices which may lead the farmers to bankruptcy.
