Foresters from Krotoszyn rescued a fallow deer which got stuck in an orchard fence located near Ostatni Grosz (Greater Poland Voivodeship). They cut the wires and released the distressed animal.
A fallow deer got stuck in a fence surrouding an orchard right by the village of Ostatni Grosz (The Last Penny - edit.), near Krotoszyn. The trapped animal was spotted by Łukasz Jasiak, an employee of the local forestry, who immediately notified the nearest forester.
"After a swift assessment of the situation, we've organised pliers needed to cut the wires which the deer was entangled in," said Przemysław Świerblewski from Krotoszyn Forestry District.
Chief forester from Rochy Forest Unit Krystian Chmielarz and his deputy Tobiasz Ostój stepped up to the rescue. "It was crucial to cut the wire as close to the antlers as possible, so they needed to come as close as possible to the distressed animal. When they finally managed to get close enough, Tobiasz cut the wire and the deer ran away," Świerblewski said.
Not the first time
It was not the first time when Krystian Chmielarz saved a fallow deer from trouble. In 2018, foresters from Lila Forest Unit near Ruda next to Krotoszyn, heard a struggle and sounds characteristic of fallow deer. It turned out it was a deer entangled in a rope of sorts, most likely a binder twine. The animal was saved by Chmielarz and forester Marcin Woźniak.
"You need to act fats in such situations, because trapped animals endure enourmous stress and try to free themselves at all costs, often getting injured. But you must also be very careful due to the unpredictable behaviour of a scared specimen," Świerblewski said.
