On the last day of 2019 and the first 6 hours of 2020 there have been 1246 fires in Poland, which took the lives of 2 people and left 12 injured - the spokesman for the Polish State Fire Service (PSP) Senior Brigadier Paweł Frątczak said on Wednesday.
The PSP spokesman said that on the New Year's Eve and the first 6 hours of the New Year firefighters were dispatched to 2092 various incidents, including 1246 fires, which took the lives of 2 people and injured 12. Apart from fires, there were 686 local dangers and 160 false alarms.
The most tragic fires happened on Tuesday. One person died in a fire of a detached house, whereas the other in Ostrów Mazowiecka in a disused commercial building. The causes of the said incidents were yet unknown.
The Fire Service also informed that 83 interventions pertained to damage caused by strong wind - mainly in Pomerania, Masovia, as well as Warmia and Masuria.
Furthermore, 17 interventions were caused by carbon monoxide leakages, as a result of which 1 person died and 6 were injured. The fatal incident took place in Mysłowice, Silesian Voivodeship.
According to PSP, since October 1, firefighters intervened 1530 times because of carbon monoxide incidents, in which 21 people died and 734 suffered from poisoning.
In Warsaw on New Year's Eve, firefighters were dispatched 119 times in total. There were 50 fires, 39 of which were caused by fireworks.
"It was a very turbulent and busy night. Total number of fires, 1246, is certainly sad and terrifying," Senior Brigadier Frątczak said. He added that in the same period last year there had been 1666 incidents, of which 825 were fires.
