Divers from a fire service water rescue team were dispatching their equipment at the reservoir near Sieradz when they noticed strangely forming waves on the water. It turned out that there was a sunken car with a body behind the steering wheel.
The practice was planned to take place at the Próba reservoir in Brzeźno Municipality (Łódz Voivodeship).
"This was supposed to be a practice that our divers carry out on a regular basis. They saw waves crashing against something in one place. One of the divers swam out to check what it was," said Deputy Brigadier, Jarosław Wasylik, from Sieradz Fire Service.
It turned out that there was a green passenger car under water. Behing the wheel was a body of a male.
"We took it (the body) to shore. As we're not doctors and couldn't pronounce death, we tried resuscitation," Wasylik added.
The attempt was put to an end by a doctor who did pronounce death after he had arrived.
Car in gear and fishing rods
The deceased was a 64-year-old resident of Sieradz. He is believed to have come to the Próba reservoir for fishing - most likely the previous evening.
"The doctor who arrived at the scene did not exclude involvement of third parties," said Jolanta Szkilnik from prosecutor's office in Sieradz.
An investigation has been launched into involuntary manslaughter, for which the punishment is up to five years in prison.
The services that were working at the scene said that the green daewoo lanos hauled out the water was in gear.
"The car ran over the fishing rods that were laid on the shore," said firefighters were at the scene.
