Polish customs checked a package sent from Canada to an address in the town of Chociwel (Western Pomeranian Voivodeship). Inside the box, instead of spices declared by the sender, the officers found human ashes. The customs suspect the sender wanted to bypass tight restrictions regarding transport of human remains into Poland. The police were notified about the case.
Polish customs officers inspected a package that was supposed to contain spices. It turned out, however, that instead of thyme or saffron, there was a very different kind of substance inside.
"Inside the box there was a plastic can with tag informing about the name of the deceased, date and number of the cremation, as well as the name of the funeral home. The can contained a plastic bag with a grey powder inside," a spokeswoman for the Chamber of Fiscal Administration in Szczecin, Małgorzata Brzoza, said on Monday.
The police are on the case
She added that the customs officers who inspected the package were very surprised with this kind of substance.
According to the information included in the customs declaration, the box was supposed to contain spices. The declared value of the delivery was 40 Canadian dollars.
"The package was supposed to be delivered to an addressee in Chociwel. Most likely, the sender wanted to bypass tight restrictions regarding transporting human remains into Poland," Brzoza said.
Due to a suspicion of attempt of smuggling of human remains into Poland, the case was referred to the police in Szczecin.
