A community officer from Sosnowiec (Silesian Voivodeship) saw smoke coming out one of the apartments in a residential block. When he climbed onto a neighbouring balcony, he heard a sound like moaning or whining. After he got inside he looked into a crib, but luckily it was empty. What he did find was a dog suffocating with smoke. The brave officer saved the distressed animal and shortly after the firefighters extinguished the flames.

Before noon on Friday (May 13), community offcer Fabian Walotek from Police Station No.3 in Sosnowiec was on duty, when he saw smoke coming out of a 10th-floor apartment in one of the residential buildings in Zagórze district.

"He immediately rushed to check if anyone needed help. He knocked on the door and shouted, but no one answered. Then he decided to check if residents of another flat were in, the one whose balcony adjoins that of the burning apartment," said Sonia Kepper from Sosnowiec Police.

He got inside burning apartment through balcony

The neighbours were at home and they let the officer onto their balcony.

"There, he saw the balcony door was open and he heard something like moaning or whining. When he noticed a baby crib in the room, he decided to go jump through the railing onto the other balcony and went inside the burning flat," Kepper said.

Luckily, the crib was empty, but the officer found a terrified dog which was suffocating with smoke.

Police: the dog was grateful

Officer Walotek took the dog in his hands and went back onto the neighbours' balcony. A few minutes later, firefighters entered the burning flat and extinguished the flames.

"The joyful dog seemed to perfectly understand what had happened and was very grateful for the received help. It also felt quite safe and at ease when waiting for its owners in a police car," Kepper added.
