Doctor's from the General and Children Opthamology Clinic of the Medical University of Lublin operated on two 5-year-old Ukrainian brothers who had sustained eye injuries in a missile explosion. The boys suffered damage to their corneas and retinas. According to the medics, the children are likely to require a long-term rehabilitation. The boys' mother also underwent a surgery, as the doctors had found shards of glass in her eyes.
"The twins are feeling definitely better than before the operation. The boys are frightened but it's no wonder because together with their mom they fled war," TVN24 reporter Adrian Zaborowski said.
He meant two 5-year-old twin brothers who have been taken to the General and Children Opthamology Clinic of the Medical University of Lublin, which helps refugees from Ukraine. The boys suffered damage to their corneas and retinas. Their mother, Olena, has also been admitted to the clinic.
Professor Rejdak: long-term treatment may be needed
"All three have suffered greatly as a result of warfare. They all have sustained injuries to their eyes. They couldn't see when they arrived here. It was heartbreaking to watch the mother groping around, trying to look after her sons," said the head of the clinic, Professor Robert Rejdak.
He added that the boys might need a long-term rehabilitation. It's possible that they will also require further surgeries. "Sometimes, during recovery some changes may appear that can require surgical treatment," the doctor explained.
Boys' mom had shards of glass in her eyes
The surgeons also operated on the boys' mom, as they had found shards of glass in her eyes. "She couldn't see anything for a few days. She regained sight after the operation. The prognosis is optimistic," TVN24 reporter said.
He added that the family, originally from Donetsk area, had to leave behind everything they had. "Their home has been completely destroyed. Even the hospital at which the boys had been treated before has been bombed too," Zaborowski stressed.
The mother, whose name is Olena, had managed to evacuate first to Dnipro, and from there to Lviv. Finally - thanks to a cooperation between a Lviv ophtamologist and doctors in Lublin - the family has been transferred to the clinic.
7-year-old Darina's sight saved
The Lublin clinic has been cooperating with Ukrainian ophtamologists for more than a decade now. After the war broke out, this cooperation has been taken to another level. The doctors from the clinic have declared they would keep on treating refugees free of charge - both children, as well as adults.
In late March, a 7-year-old Darina was operated on in Lublin. During evacuation from Kiev, the girl had fallen on a tree branch which punctured her eye.
"The surgery was successful. The prognosis is optimistic, the child will see," Prof. Rejdak told tvn24.pl on March 25.
