Polish Border Guard officers and soldiers safeguarding the Polish-Belarusian border found an Ethopian woman who had given birth to a little girl just hours before. The mother and the newborn were both taken to a hospital in Hajnówka.
Podlaski Border Guard Regional Unit informed about the incident on Tuesday (April 16) at its website. According to the statement, the woman required immediate medical assistance.
"During the conversation with the foreign woman it turned out she was an Ethiopian citizen, who had given birth to her little daughter several hours before. The officers called a military ambulance to the woman, which immediately took her and her newborn child to a hospital in Hajnówka," we read.
The Border Guard also informed that, by April 15, its officers had offerred help to people who had illegally crossed the Polish-Belarusian border on 74 occasions.
The migrant crisis on the Belarus' borders with Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia has been trigerred in August 2021 by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who is being accused of waging a hybrid war. His tactic lies in an organized transit of migrants to towards the border with said three EU countries. During his reign, Lukashenko has threatened the neighbouring EU states' border security on numerous occasions.
The Polish Border Guard says approximately 2,000 illegal immigrants tried to enter Poland from Belarus since the beginning of April. In March, approx. 3,400 such attempts were recorded - a significant increase compared to January and February. Migrants who tried to enter the Polish territory were of 28 coutries of origin.
Activists who have been helping immigrants since the beginning of the humanitarian crisis claim that approximately 60 people have died so far at the border with Belarus.
