"There's an a belief rooted in our consciousness that if a person is overweight, they lack strong will and they can only blame themselves. This is not true," blogger Urszula Chowaniec told TVN24. Together with personal trainer Edyta Litwiniuk they discussed obesity as a social problem. The discussion was sparked by the latest video posted by Poland's famous athlete and nutritionist Anna Lewandowska, in which she dances dressed as an overweight person.
A few days ago, Anna Lewandowska posted on Instagram a video of herself dressed as an overweight woman and dancing to a song by Beyonce. "Very #bodypositive! Too thin, too big - how do you like me now?" - she wrote.
"Intentions were good, but it went wrong"
This video and the problem of obesity in society sparked a discussion in TVN24's "Tak Jest" programme. Urszula Chowaniec, author of a blog about plus-size issues, argued that "the very concept of fatsuit is a concept having racist roots".
She admitted she didn't like the video posted by Lewandowska. "Despite good intentions behind this video, it only perpetuates stereotypes regarding overweight bodies. (...) I believe that the intentions were good, but it went wrong," Chowaniec said.
"There's an a belief rooted in our consciousness that if a person is overweight, they lack strong will. This approach is based on assumption that overweight persons can only blame themselves. This is not true," the blogger explained. She added that "it's a very complex issue, treating obesity is very difficult and has to involve any specialists".
"She didn't mean to offend"
Edyta Litwiniuk, personal trainer and dietician, said Anna Lewandowska and her were friends, and that "the last thing the author (of the video) had in mind was to offend anyone". "Ania is all for women, she's a mother raising two daughters," she added.
She added that the problem of obesity should be discussed more often. "Undoubtedly, this is the problem of our time. 70 percent of our society suffers from overweight and obesity".
The dietician also reminded that "obesity is a disease entity classified by the WHO already 50 years ago".
She also pointed out that "there is a whole spectrum of factors leading to obesity". "Environmental, lack of exercise, bad diet. Apart from that there also psychological, genetic and hormonal factors" - Litwiniuk added.
