The Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) has notified the prosecutor's office about the possibility of offense committed by the President of the Supreme Audit Office (NIK) Marian Banaś. This was a result of the NIK chief's asset declaration control, in the course of which, according to the CBA, "irregularities have been found". Banaś responded with a statement in which he declared readiness to provide explanation, and that he awaits the end of the case with confidence.
The Bureau issued a statement on Friday morning regarding the notifacation, reminding that the control procedure regarding Marian Banaś' asset declarations from 2015-2019 ended on November 28. The control itself has revealed irregularities which, according to the CBA, justify referring the case to the prosecutor's office.
On October 23, Marian Banaś submitted his remarks and explanations regarding the CBA's findings, however they have all been rejected in full by the Bureau.
The CBA informed in the statement that it has grounds to suspect Marian Banaś of providing false asset declarations, concealing actual state of his assets, and having undocumented sources of income.
Banaś responded with a statement in which he said that he would await the end of the case with confidence, as well that he was ready to provide any and all explanations.
"I'd like strenuously deny allegations that I have been concealing my assets and had undocumented income sources," the head of NIK informed.
He also stressed he was happy to know that the prosecutor's office and an independent court would look into his asset declarations case.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Friday that he had examined the CBA report on the NIK chief. "I've arrived at a conclusion that the report should convince Mr Marian Banaś to submit his resignation". He also added that, in his opinion, the head of NIK would resign already on Friday. "If it doesn't happen, we have plan B," he stressed.
Asked what "plan B" would entail, Morawiecki said that he would provide details when Marian Banaś would decide not to step down. "I think he will resign" the PM added.
