During the last weekend in Poland over 500 fires broke out which took the lives of 11 people - the spokesman for the State Fire Service Senior Brigadier Paweł Frątczak informed on Monday. He added that it was the most tragic weekend in months when it comes to the number of victims.
Frątczak said that last week fire service units were dispatched to various incidents over 6.000 times, of which 1.600 were fires that took the lives of 16 people and leaving 67 injured.
The last weekend was the worst when it comes to the number of fires and victims. 555 fires broke out, in which 11 people died and 16 got injured. On Saturday there were 318 fires, 7 people died, 9 were injured, whereas on Sunday, 4 people died, 9 got injured in 237 fires.
Fires which resulted in deaths happened in the following voivodeships: Masovian, Warmian-Masurian, WestPomeranian, Opole, Łódź, Greater Poland, Lower Silesia and Podlaskie. In most cases fire broke out in houses and flats, in one case a trailer caught fire.
Firefighters say that in terms of victims last weekend was the most tragic in the last few months. High number of fires are said to have been a result of a sudden spell of cold weather.
According to PSP statistics, between October 1 and November 24, units were dispatched 700 times to calls regarding carbon monoxide. There were 289 recorded cases of carbon monoxide poisoning - 8 people died, of which 4 last week.
