Łukasz Piszczek annouced the end of his career in the national team. "My adventure with the Polish team has come to an end," the 33-year-old player wrote on Twitter. Borussia Dortmund's defender played 65 games for the national team and scored 3 goals.
"There comes a time in life when you have to take difficult, but rational decisions. After long consideration, I've taken such decision. I've had an honour to proudly represent my country for 11 years. It was a very special time. I will always keep a warm memory," Piszczek wrote.
Piszczek played in four major tournaments. Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker called him up last minute for the Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland where he played only once, in second half against Germany.
During Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine, Piszczek was an already established first-eleven player, however Poland's poor performance was again a big disappointment.
The biggest success in decades for the Polish team was reaching the quarter-finals in Euro 2016 in France. Poland lost after penalties to Portugal - the eventual winners of the tournament.
Piszczek played his last two games for Poland in this year's World Cup in Russia. Poles failed to qualify from group stage.
In July, coach Adam Nawałka resigned from managing the national team after disappointing performance in the World Cup in Russia. He will be replaced by Jerzy Brzęczek.
"I wish plenty of success to Jerzy Brzęczek and our national team," Piszczek summed up.
