The Marshal of the Senate Tomasz Grodzki has met with the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli in Brussels. "It was a very nice, constructive meeting," said the Italian politician. Marshal Grodzki declared his readiness for cooperation between the Senate and the EU Parliament.
Marshal Grodzki was assisted in Brussels by the Permanent Representative of Poland to the European Union Andrzej Sadoś and the Chairman of the Senate's Committee on Foreign Affairs Bogdan Klich (Civic Coalition).
Democracy first
"It was a very nice, constructove meeting. We have common priorities to strenghten our democratic systems, especially democracy in Europe, by placing the power our parliaments in the centre. Europe discusses reform process and involvement of national parliaments will be crucial," David Sassoli said.
Marshal Grodzki said he was delighted that together with the EP chief they "have immediately found common ground when it comes to principles".
He explained that those were "the rule of law, decency, respecting the law, and the necessity to preserve and expand the European community".
"The Polish Senate will be fully open for cooperation with the European Parliament," Marshal Grodzki declared.
Climate and economy
Among the topics discussed at Wednesday's meeting was climate change. Marshal Grodzki stressed that issues related with pollution and climate change were not easy to solve. He added, on the other hand, that steps taken by the European institutions were going in the right direction.
Grodzki and Sassoli also discussed the EU budget. "We also talked about the European budget, which is always difficult in its conception, but usually everyone finds something satisfying in it. I've expressed hope that Polish representatives would play key role in creating of the common budget," the Marshal said.
Grodzki also informed that he had invited the EP chief to visit the Poish Senate.
PiS MEPs didn't come
After the meeting with Sassoli, the Senate Marshal met with Polish Members of the European Parliament. Law and Justice (PiS) MEPs did not take part in the meeting despite being invited.
After the second meeting Grodzki said he would want Polish MEPs to work together fot the benefit of Polish issues in Europe. He added that his doors would always be open to all MEPs regardless of the party they belong to. He also reassured that the Senate is ready to work together with them for the benefit of Poland.
