Ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party members have been sending signals regarding potential postponement of local elections in Poland. Commenting on said rumours, president Andrzej Duda said he treated the news purely as "a media topic" and that no one had contacted him in that regard. He added, however, that the concurrent dates of local and parliamentary elections was "a rather difficult situation". PiS chairman Jarosław Kaczyński called the issue "a technical problem".
Politicians from the ruling Law and Justice party have been speculating on postponing local elections a few months and holding them in the spring of 2024, so that they don't coincine with parliamentary elections. According to current calendar, both parliamentary and local elections have been scheduled for autumn in 2023.
President: no one approached me with such an initiative
"No one approached me with such an initiative, no one held any serious consultations with me in that regard," president Andrzej Duda said on Tuesday, dismissing the news as "a media topic".
He admitted, however, that both elections would indeed coincide. "This situation, in my view, is quite problematic. The question is if there are any proposals in that regard, than what sort of postponement will they assume. It's hard for me to tell at tell at the moment. To me, this informationa and this idea have an unofficial character. When it becomes more official, then we shall look into it. At the moment I see a problem," president Duda added.
Kaczyński: technical problem, not political
Law and Justice chairman Jarosław Kaczyński was asked at a press conference on Tuesday how advanced were the works on a bill on local elections postponement.
"At the moment we haven't made any final decisions on how to solve this, although it's definitely a problem," Kaczyński said. "It's something that requires serious thinking through, but if anyone thinks we've made any decisions, then they are wrong," he added.
He added it was "a certain technical problem, not political".
