Asked on Wednesday how many times the chief of his office Michał Dworczyk had met with Constitutional Tribunal chief judge Julia Przyłębska to discuss ongoing cases in said Tribunal, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki would not give a definitive answer. He called the so-called email scandal and messages allegedly leaked from Dworczyk's account a "Russian provocation", adding that various media outlets were "falling into Vladimir Putin's trap".
Correspondence allegedly leaked from the Head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister Michał Dworczyk's and PM Mateusz Morawiecki's private email accounts has been appearing in the internet since mid-2021. The government persists in denying the leaked emails' authenticity, blaming Russian secret services for being behind the scandal, but so far those in charge have not provided any examples of fake emails. On the contrary, at least a few leaked messages have been already authenticated by people whose names appear in said correspondence.
Another email allegedly leaked from Michał Dworczyk's account was published on Monday (July 4). The message had been sent by Dworczyk to PM Morawiecki on January 7, 2019. In the message, the head of PM's office said he had "visited Julia P." that day and discussed three topics with her. The prime minister was reply briefly: "Yes-OK, thanks". The said "three topics" were three ruling issued by the Constitutional Tribunal.
"Russian provocation" and "Putin's trap"
At a press conference on Wednesday, a TVN24 reporter asked Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Wednesday how many times the chief of his office Michał Dworczyk had met with Constitutional Tribunal chief judge Julia Przyłębska to discuss ongoing cases in said Tribunal.
The prime minister would not give a straight answer. Instead, he reiterated the narration about Poland being a victim of a "Russian provocation".
"This yet again shows how various media fall into a trap set up by Vladimir Putin. Expertise confirmed by an American company specialising in cybersecurity has provided evidence that Russian and Belarussian services are behind these provocations and hacking of politicians' email accounts," Morawiecki said.
"Just like last week, like last month, I did not comment on Russian provocations, I should not comment on it today as well. The situtation around us is very tense, there's war in Ukraine, we will be seeing plenty more of such provocations," he added.
The reporter repeated his question, to which the prime minister replied: "If you're asking 'how many times', then you must assume that Russian provocations are the truth".
Asked how many times he had met with judge Julia Przyłębska himself to discuss cases pending in the Constitutional Tribunal, Morawiecki said: "I see an attempt to build various theories based on these provocations. This is a well-known manipulation technique, I think Jerzy Urban (former government spokesperson in communist Poland) would be proud. I don't want to get entangled in an intrigue of this sort," the prime minister added.
