Maria Andrejczyk's big heart has been appreciated. Olympic silver winner in javelin auctioned off her medal for charity. The charitable cause was quickly achieved, while the company which won the auction said Andrejczyk would keep her trophy.
Shortly after Tokyo Olympics, Andrejczyk announced she was not going to get attached to her medal. She decided to put it up for charitable auction.
"This was a spark really, I felt that this medal couldn't stay at mine's, I had to be paid forward, because I know very well how many obstacles and pain I had to endure during those five years to win this medal, and now I want to pass this power on further," the athlete said at the time.
Big heart appreciated
The starting price for the silver medal was 200,000 zlotys. It was reached quickly and with a hefty surplus.
A supermarket chain won the auction and paid the money to the charity's bank account. The company also said it would not take the medal from Andrejczyk, which only made the whole story even more heartwarming.
Also fans got involved in the action and managed to collect 300,000 zlotys, which means that a total of 500,000 zlotys was gathered.
The money will be used to fund treatment for Miłosz from Lower Silesian province. The boy suffers from a congenital heart disease, which requires an expensive surgery in the United States. Thanks to the Polish javelin thrower, it will be made possible.
This wasn't the first time when Andrejczyk was involved in charity. Her big heart has been praised by Polish and international media.
