The leader of Civic Platform Donald Tusk has invited the ruling Law and Justice party chairman Jarosław Kaczyński to a pre-election debate. "Dear Jarosław, there's nothing to worry about. With me it will be in Polish. An hour of debate and that's it," Tusk said in a video published on social media on Monday (August 21).
The Civic Platform leader Donald Tusk on Monday published a video on social media which begins with a fragment showing reporters in the Sejm asking the PiS chairman Jarosław Kaczyński if he is ready to stand in a debate against Tusk. "Gladly, but with Weber," PiS leader replied, referring to the European People's Party chairman Manfred Weber, a German national.
Poland's ruling party has been forcing a narrative potraying Donald Tusk an alleged representative of Germany in Poland.
Tusk challenged Kaczyński in a video published on X. "Dear Jarosław, there's nothing to worry about. With me it will be in Polish. An hour of debate and that's it," he said.
Online portals Wirtualna Polska and Onet said in earlier in August they wanted to organize a debate between the leaders of the two largest parties - Kaczyński and Tusk. The editors-in-chief send out invitations two both politicians. Tusk declared he would take part in the debate, whereas Kaczyński did not respond to the invitation.
Poland has scheduled this year's parliamentary election for October 15. The ruling camp has recently decided a national referendum, composed of four questions, will take place on the same day as the election.
PiS says the referendum aims to make sure the will of the people is respected on four issues: the privatisation of state companies, raising the retirement age, a fence on the Belarus border, and accepting migrants under a European Union deal.
