The Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) party has changed its name from SLD to Lewica (The Left) - the spokesperson for the party, Anna-Maria Żukowska informed on Tuesday after the national convention of the alliance.
The change is a result of the formation of the Lewica Electoral Committee, comprised of candidates from a variety of left-wing parties: the Democratic Left Alliance, Wiosna, Razem and a number of smaller groupings.
"During the convention, we have changed the statute and the name. The delegates, who showed up in great numbers, have made an unanimous decision," Żukowska told Polish Press Agency (PAP). She stressed that the change of the name was the only point on the agenda and no other issues, such as the the candidates lists, were discussed.
On Monday (August 5), at a press conference in Warsaw, the leaders of SLD, Wiosna (Spring) and Lewica Razem informed that the left-wing parties would run in the October's election as KW Lewica (Electoral Committee Lewica) and the SLD structures would become the organisational foundation for the project.
As a result, KW Lewica will not run as a coalition, which would have to pass the 8-percent threshold, but as a party committee, which only needs 5 percent of votes to win seats in the parliament.
