Former senator Józef Pinior has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for providing false information in his asset declarations. His former assistant has been sentenced to 5 years behind bars on corruption charges. A district court in Wrocław decided not to grant conditional suspension of the sentence.
A Wrocław court on Monday announced its verdict in the case of former senator Józef Pinior and his former assistant Jarosław Wardęga (both have agreed to have their names published - PAP), as well as 14 other people suspected of handing and offering bribes.
Pinior has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for stating false information in his asset declarations, in which he did not include the money he was receiving. His former assistant has been sentenced to 5 years in prison. The court decided not to conditionally suspend the sentence.
Pinior, an opposition figure in communist Poland, has been acquitted of a charge of extorting money for lectures.
The verdict is not yet legally binging.
In March, both Pinior and Wardęga were sentenced to 18 months in prison for corruption in another trial. Court of Appeals in Wrocław, however, allowed Pinior to serve his prison sentence at home, under electronic surveillance.
Józef Pinior said the sentence was politically motivated, but was glad to have been acquitted of some charges. He declared he would continue to defend his case. His former assistant also said he was innocent and vowed to "fight until the end".
