Unofficial reports about coronavirus in the national team appeared on Tuesday. The football association (PZPN) would not confirm the news at the time.
On Wednesday, however, it became clear that Mateusz Klich of Leeds United has contracted the virus.
"Poland's national team got COVID tests results this morning. Unfortunately, in the case of Mateusz Klich, the result was positive. The player feels fine and doesn't show symptoms of the disease, but nevertheless his trip to Budapest is out of the question. Today, we've repeated the test" - said PZPN spokesman.
According to UEFA protocol, players and staff must take three coronavirus tests (two days before each game at the latest).
Losing a player right before the first qualifier will not make life easier for Poland's new coach Paulo Sousa. The Portuguese manager will head the team for the first time against Hungary in Budapest in Thursday.
Three days later Poland will host Andorra in Warsaw, and on March 31, the team will face England at Wembley.
