We hope that the declaration regarding military cooperation between the USA and Poland will be signed on Monday - Poland's foreign minister Jacek Czaputowicz told journalist, asked about the meeting between presidents Duda and Trump in New York.
President Andrzej Duda and his wife Agata Kornhauser-Duda are beginning their visit to the United States on Saturday. On Monday in New York, Polish president will take part in the 74th session of the UN General Assembly. Also on Monday, Duda is set to meet with US President Donald Trump.
On Friday, the head of Polish diplomacy, Jacek Czaputowicz, visited the 32nd Air Base in Łask, where he spoke about the achievements of Polish foreign policy between 2015 and 2019, especially about US Army presence in Poland.
Asked by the journalists about Duda-Trump meeting planned on Monday, Czaputowicz said: "The American side initiated this meeting. Both president will be attending the UN session, and the American side asked for the meeting. The presidents will discuss cooperation between the two countries. We aware that President Donald Trump had to postpone the visit planned for September 1, and now he's reaching out again. We also hope that the declaration on military cooperation will be signed, which would specify details regarding location of US troops in Poland".
Czaputowicz also said that Monday's meeting would be "an important event". "The declaration (on military cooperation) was already negotiated and we hope that the signing will happen," he added.
He also stressed that Monday's meeting in New York "doesn't nullify" president Trump's announcement that he wanted to visit Poland this fall.
"What's important is to have this declaration signed so it doesn't have to wait for the next visit (Trump's to Poland). It can be signed on the next occassion. It's very important for both sides. Let's remember that President Donald Trump wanted to sign it personally. Other documents were signed by the vice president during his visit to Warsaw," said the head of Polish diplomacy.
Czaputowicz also informed that during Monday's meeting the presidents will discuss military cooperation, but also in other areas. He mentioned energy security and the question of American gas. "I don't know if this will be the moment to say something concrete regarding the visa waiver," he added.
