Beata K., vocalist and co-founder of Polish music group Bajm, was arrested on Wednesday by police in Warsaw's Mokotów district for driving under influence of alcohol. She heard charges on Thursday. "I sincerely regret what happened yesterday. I'm deeply ashamed," she wrote in a statement.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening in Warsaw's Mokotów district. Beata P. (widely known as Beata K.) was driving her bmw north on Niepodległości Avenue. According to unofficial reports, Bajm group lead singer was zigzag driving from one curb to the other. Another motorist saw it, called the police, and blocked the woman's car at the crossing with Batorego street.
Zigzag driving
According to Robert Koniuszy from Mokotów police, the 61-year-old was tested for alcohol. "The test showed 0.2% of blood alcohol concentration," he said. "The woman's driving licence has been confiscated and car released to a designated person".
Shortly after being detained Beata P. was released home. She returned to the police station on Thursday. "She's been charged with driving under influence, she is facing up to two years in prison," Koniuszy told TVN24 reporter Piotr Borowski.
The officer also shared some details of the incident. "The volkswagen driver saw a car approaching from the direction of Piaseczno, whose movement suggested it could have been driven by an intoxicated person: it was crossing lanes from one curb to the other. It was dangerous. The driver, together with his partner, approached the suspicious car, blocked its way and called the police. Officers who arrived at the scene immediately smelled alcohol from the woman.
Statement by Beata K.
TVN24 reporter has learned the singer refused to give a statement. "It's her right. She didn't reply when asked whether she pleaded guilty or not. She simply refused to provide a statement. The case will be referred to court," he explained. "Further detention or police custody weren't necessary," he added.
We've tried a number of times to contact the artist's managers and ask for comment. We've also send a text message, but to no effect. It was only in the late afternoon when a statement was published in the artist's social media profiles. "Dear all, I apologise everyone. I know I've disappointed You. I sincerely regret what happened yesterday. I'm deeply ashamed. I know I must suffer consequences of what happened. I'm ready to do so," the statement reads.
Polish Press Agency (PAP) was the first to inform about the incident.
