Former Poland's prime minister and Civic Platform leader and outgoing president of the European Council Donald Tusk was elected the new president of the European People's Party (EPP) on Wednesday at the party congress in Zagreb.
Tusk was supported by 491 delegates. 37 votes were against his candidacy, which altogether translated into 93-percent of support.
Former Poland's prime minister had no competitors, so it was clear he would be appointed to stand at the helm of the faction.
Earlier on Wednesday, Tusk said in his speech in Zagreb: "under no circumstances, we can give away the sphere of security and order to political populists, manipulators, and autocrats, who lead people to believe that freedom cannot be reconciled with security".
Croatian prime minister Andrej Plenković said on Wednesday that the outgoing president of the EU Council "will do a great job due to his national and European experience".
Tusk will replace France's Joseph Daul as the head of the party.
