The Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich on Thursday (Dec.21) relit a Hanukkah menorah damaged last week by a group of teenagers in Wrocław.
Last week the menorah was destroyed by a group of five teenagers, who also set an Israeli flag on fire. The incident was captured by CCTV cameras and recorded on a phone by one of the perpetrators.
The following day all five teenagers - aged 14 to 15 - were detained by the police. Their case was referred to a family court.
The hannukiah was placed in the same location as it had been the previous week - at Oławska Street in central Wrocław. On Thursday afternoon, the Hanukkah candles were relit by the Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich.
"Together with Wrocław's Jewish community, in this festive period, we want to light the candles on the hannukiah once again, in order to erase the memory of last week's disgraceful act. Wrocław is a wondeful, multireligious, and multicultural city," the rabbi said.
"The attack on national and religious symbols, and thereby on the feelings of Wrocław residents, should have never taken place here," Michael Schudrich said.
A new Israeli flag was also placed next to the menorah.
