The Supreme Audit Office chief Marian Banaś on Thursday informed about the result of an inquiry into the preparations of last year's presidential election by postal voting, which did not take place in the end. Banaś said his office assessed the election organisation process negatively.
He informed that the NIK has notified the prosecutor's office about two suspicions of law violation in connection to the election preparation.
At the end of the conference, the NIK chief said "it's a weird coincidence that two days ago we received an email about bombs planted on our premises and in eight of our branches". "Today, in turn, there was an email saying may son was about to commit suicide, so the police turned up at my family's place in Kraków and at my son's" - he added.
"I'll leave the comments to you" - he concluded.
Polish Press Agency informed on Thursday that after receiving a report about an the alleged suicide attempt by Jakub Banaś, the son of the NIK chief, the police in Kraków checked it and said it was false.
"We spoke to a family member. The notification was not confirmed" - said Sebastian Gleń, police spokesman.
Civic Coalition lawmaker Dariusz Rosati informed about the police intervention on Twitter.
"Police at Banaś's at 6 a.m. checking if the son committed suicide. Huge panic in the government ahead of the publication of the NIK report on the prime minister's accountability for postal vote" - he wrote.
Inquiries into suspicions of irregularities in Marian Banaś's asset and tax declarations have been going on for nearly 18 months now.
The case pertaining to NIK chief's assets came to light after "Superwizjer" TVN revealed that members of Kraków criminal underground had been running an hourly hotel in a property owned by Banaś. The men who ran the business were involved in procuring and gangland violence.
In December 2019, Białystok prosecutor's office launched an inquiry and ordered the police to search a number of locations. On April 28, the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA) officer entered a home in the outskirts of Warsaw belonging to Jakub Banaś, the son of the President of the Supreme Audit Office Marian Banaś.
The latter issued a statement later that day standing in front the NIK headquarters in Warsaw. "The CBA operation taken in relation to my son cannot be viewed outside the context of the results of a control of the organisation of the presidential election that were supposed to take place in May 2020, fragments of which were published yesterday by the media" - said the NIK chief.
