President Andrzej Duda spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday (Jan. 16). After the talks, Duda said that "Ukraine should be invited to join the NATO" and assured Zelenskiy that Poland's foreign policy would continue to be "a policy of support for Ukraine".
After speaking with Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Davos on Tuesday, Andrzej Duda informed the two had discussed the kind of support Ukraine required to effectively defend itself from Russian aggression. "We spoke about the current frontline and social situation."
The Polish president stressed it was crucial to strive towards Ukraine's full NATO membership. "It's not possible during an ongoing war, but I think Ukraine should be invited to join the NATO, which would launch a process of discussing this issue in individual national parliaments of the Allied member states. This process could progress, it's extremely important for the morale of Ukraine's defenders," he said.
In his opinion, Ukraine's presence in the NATO would be an important factor when it comes to the strength of the Alliance as a whole as well as for Poland's security.
The two presidents also spoke about Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's planned visit to Ukraine. Duda told Zelenskiy he and Tusk had discussed Poland's foreign policy on a number of occasions, including the policy regarding Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
"I assured Mr President Volodymyr Zelensky that this policy will be stable and it will continue to be a policy of support for Ukraine, that he can safely sit down to talks with Mr Prime Minister Donald Tusk already in a few days in Kyiv," Duda said.
"I trust it will be a good policy, which we will be able to pursue together, both the prime minister, the government, and the president," he added.
President Zelenskiy said on the X social media platform that he had met with Andrzej Duda "to discuss our bilateral relations, including our cooperation on Ukraine's path to EU membership". "We discussed the battlefield situation and further defense assistance for Ukraine. We also coordinated our positions ahead of the NATO summit in Washington," the Ukrainian president added.
