The body of the second teenager who went missing was found in the Gdańsk Bay nearby the Brzeźno pier. Two boys, aged 16 and 17, drowned while swimming in the sea. One of them died after being taken to a hospital, the body of the other was found in the water.
Aspirant Karina Kamińska, spokeswoman of Gdańsk police, informed about finding the body of the second teenager that went missing on Friday. She said that rescuers tried to resuscitate the boy, but unfortunately, unsuccessfully.
The police notified the Gdańsk Centre for Crisis Interventions, in order to provide psychological help to the families of the two boys.
As Kamińska informed earlier on, the services were notified about two boys who went missing nearby the Brzeźno pier. They boys were residents of Gdańsk and Sopot, 16- and 17-year-olds, who went swimming in the Baltic Sea. They swam out some 50-100 metres from the shore.
The SAR (Sea Search and Rescue Service) officers from the station in Świbno arrived at the scene. Five firefighters brigades and a helicopter from the Polish Naval Air Forces in Gdynia also joined the search.
The helicopter located one of the boys and the boy was transported to the shore. He was unconscious. The rescuers tried to resuscitate him, but the boy died later in a hospital.
The search after the second teenager carried on, but after 90 minutes it was called off. "The search mission was called off because the conditions at the scene left no chances for a positive ending. Besides, the missing boy was under water already for too long," the SAR spokesman, Rafał Goeck said.
The body of the second boy was found after the rescue mission had been called off.
Another teenager, a friend of the two boys, who was swimming alongside them informed the Voluntary Water Rescue Emergency (WOPR) team. According to his statement, at one point he lost eye contact with his friends and decided to notify the rescuers.
The Governemt Centre for Security cautions people to remain careful when spending time at the waterside, especially not to swim under the influence of alcohol.
In total, 143 people died under water between the 1st of April and the 24th of June.
