Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz met with his Danish counterpart Troels Lund Poulsen in Warsaw on Thursday (Feb. 1), where they signed an agreement on stronger defence and security cooperation between the two countries. "I can say with full responsibility that our alliance with Denmark has never been stronger than today," Polish defence minister stressed.
Talking at a press conference as EU leaders reached an agreement on aid to Ukraine, both ministers said the deal wasn't just important to Ukraine but for security in the wider region.
"This is not help only for Ukraine, it is support for our security", said Kosiniak-Kamysz.
"Denmark and Poland have the same position. The vast majority of countries in the European Union have the same position. No one present raised any objections that would block the initiative to support Ukraine as part of the European Union's peace efforts," he added.
"The earlier agreement was made before Poland acceded to NATO. 25 years in NATO, previously an agreement with Denmark, but the world has moved forward a lot. Our cooperation must be even stronger. I can say with full responsibility that our alliance with Denmark has never been stronger than today," Polish defence minister stressed.
Lund Poulsen said the newly signed agreement would lead to even stronger cooperation on defence matters. "In a situation where we are, in a critical position here in Europe, we have to stick together, we have to stand united", said the Danish defence minister.
"Just today we signed a new memorandum of understanding on security and defence cooperation between Denmark and Poland. We have a lot to do in this context, we can facilitate even stronger cooperation on a lot of defence matters. I think we have the best possibilities to do this in the future," Lund Poulsen added.
Denmark is a member of the Multinational Northeast Corps in Szczecin. Nearly 400 NATO officers, non-commissioned officers and civilian employees serve in the corps.
The Multinational Northeast Corps Command plays the role of the Regional Land Component Command in the NATO force structure and is responsible for the region encompassing the so-called eastern flank.
