Construction of a field hospital for coronavirus patients at the National Stadium in Warsaw has been going on since Friday. Heavy machinery is expected to arrive at the stadium on Monday to begin a full-scale preparation. The field hospital is likely to be ready take in patients already this week.
The news about the construction of the field hospital at the stadium was first reported on Sunday by "Fakty" TVN and tvn24.pl.
On Monday, Polish officials confirmed the information.
"Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has made a decision to launch field hospitals, the first one will be set up at the National Stadium; 500 beds in the first stage, of which 50 devoted to intensive care" - the chief of the PM's chancellery Michał Dworczyk said at a press conference on Monday.
"We want the field hospital for COVID-19 patients at the National Stadium to be ready to operate as soon as possible; it's a question of days, rather than weeks" - Dworczyk added.
He also stressed that the field hospital is not meant to be used immediately, as "the health care still works, despite difficulties".
Similar hospitals should soon appear in every province. Local authorities have already selected locations for construction.
