Poland could this week see up to 20,000 new coronavirus cases a day, the health ministry said on Monday, as it grapples with its third wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Ministry spokesman Wojciech Andrusiewicz told the private radio station Radio Plus that Poles should expect restrictions during the Easter holidays.
"We've estimated that an average in daily infections this week should be at approximately 15,000 cases, however daily records could spike up to as much as 20,000 cases" - Health Ministry spokesman Wojciech Andrusiewicz told private Radio Plus.
He added that, compared to the previous Monday, there has been "a slight slowdown" in the dynamics of virus spread.
Health Ministry informed on Monday about 6,170 new coronavirus cases and the death of 32 COVID patients. Since the start of the pandemic, Poland has reported 1,801,083 infection cases.
On Monday, the average daily infections number jumped up to 12,759, compared to the previous Monday's 9,875.
Asked about the upcoming Easter holidays, Mr Andrusiewicz said "it certainly won't be the Easter we've been used to before the pandemic".
"We should spend this holiday only with our closest relatives. If we want to have less restrictions in late spring and early summer, (...) then we must spend this holiday just like we did last year's Easter and Christmas" - said the ministry spokesman.
