Unvaccinated people, seniors, and those suffering from pre-existing diseases are most likely to face "the most tragic of possibilities" after contracting coronavirus, Health Ministry spokesman Wojciech Andrusiewicz said on Tuesday. This way he commented on the latest daily coronavirus report, according to which as many as 410 out of 549 of the latest COVID-related fatalities were unvaccinated people.
The Ministry of Health informed on Tuesday about 9,843 new coronavirus infection cases and 549 COVID-related deaths.
Ministry spokesman Wojciech Andrusiewicz that each week the number of coronavirus infections was dropping, and that "lately we have seen a 34-percent decrease". "In none of the country's regions the decrease was lower than 20%. Basically, in most of them the drop is at approx. 30%, whereas in Lubusz, and Warmian-Masurian provinces the decline reaches up to 42%," he said.
"Unfortunately, we still see a high level in terms of COVID-19 deaths. Here, we are still at the peak," he added.
"The most tragic of possibilities"
The spokesman stressed that out of 549 latest COVID-related deaths, as many as 410 were unvaccinated people. "Nearly 75% were not protected against infection or consequent complications." He also said that 83% of the reported fatalities were people aged 65 and older. "The average age of the deceased persons is 75. Therefore, we see that the most tragic of possibilites happens primarily to unvaccinated people, then to the seniors, and people with pre-existing diseases," he explained.
"Experts repeat one thing: these deaths happen to us because we are an ailing society. We've entered into the pandemic with a variety of chronic diseases, as an undiagnosed society: diabetes, cardiovascular diseases," he listed. "As a community, we don't monitor our health," he added.
He also underscored the fact that patient often decide too late to see a doctor, take a COVID test, or call paramedics.
Question of mandatory vaccination
Asked about mandatory vaccination for all people, Andrusiewicz said that the government was considering such option, but was not planning to introduce it at that moment.
He added that there were no decisions regarding any new restrictions, or to shorten the quarantine period. However, asked about possible new restriction with the start of 2022, he replied: "the epidemic is so dynamic that most countries, including the EU ones, can change decisions the next day. I've got used to not to issue categorical diagnoses," said Health Ministry spokesman.
