I believe that some contact between President Andrzej Duda and Donald Trump would be necessary to explain the Ukrainian issues and the situation in our region," Poland's former President Aleksander Kwaśniewski on Rozmowa Piaseckiego on TVN24. He added that if he were Duda's advisor today, he would suggest that Duda "get involved in one last mission, a sort of last dance."
Donald Trump has won the election and will become the 47th president of the United States, CNN reported. According to projections from the American station, the Republican candidate has secured enough support to ensure he receives the necessary number of electoral votes.
Kwaśniewski: Trump is unpredictable
Former President Aleksander Kwaśniewski was asked on Rozmowa Piaseckiego on TVN24 if he could predict what kind of presidency Trump's would be. He replied that he couldn't, because "Trump is an unpredictable person, as even his supporters and collaborators say that."
"This could mean it will be a good presidency, but it could also mean it will be an adventurous, irresponsible presidency that brings us a lot of trouble," he stated.
"Only after actions and nominations will we be able to know what kind of presidency it will be and what kind of time it will be for the world," the former president added. He assessed that Trump's likely victory "is not the end of the world," and "there's no reason for panic or for making irreversible actions."
Kwaśniewski: some contact with Trump would be necessary
Kwaśniewski also commented on the relations between Donald Trump and Polish President Andrzej Duda. Asked if Duda could "shape Trump's policy towards our region," he replied: "I don't know if shape it, or influence it, but try to, yes."
"Of course, there isn't much time, as Trump will take office in January. I don't think he will quickly start receiving foreign guests. I believe that by May, which is the time of the Polish elections — when the Polish president still has a strong mandate — some contact with him (Trump) would be necessary to explain the Ukrainian issues, to show him the whole complexity," he assessed.
Kwaśniewski said that "if he were today’s advisor to Andrzej Duda, he would strongly advise him to get involved in something like this, a last mission, a sort of last dance." "Even if it doesn’t have any real impact, it would be fulfilling a duty to Poland, to Ukraine, to our region," he assessed.
The former president emphasized that Trump "needs to receive credible information from people here about how the situation looks, so that he doesn’t make a mistake, so that he doesn’t fall for delusions, so that he doesn’t succumb to naïveté."
