Poland has reported 27,278 new daily coronavirus cases on Thursday, according to health ministry data, the highest number so far this year. The ministry also informed about the death of 356 COVID patients.
Thursday's number of infections was the highest daily spike in 2021, and the second-highest since the start of the pandemic in Poland. The highest number of daily cases so far - 27,875 - has been recorded on November 7, 2020.
In total, the country of 38 million has reported 1,984,248 cases and 48,388 deaths.
Poland announced on Wednesday (March 17) it was introducing nationwide restrictions as the daily tally of new coronavirus cases reached the highest level this year.
Polish health minister Adam Niedzielski announced the closure of theatres, shopping malls, hotels and cinemas from Saturday (March 20) until after the Easter holidays.
Poland has been implementing regional lockdowns to contain a surge in infections driven by a highly contagious variant first discovered in Britain.
But the government had said a national lockdown was possible if case numbers kept rising.
