The platform structure, sheds and stairs leading to it have been renovated. Not only is the first step of the stairs one meter above the ground, but there is also no point in walking up the platform as trains ceased to stop at the station over a decade ago. Then what's the point of the renovation? "It's meant to preserve the history of railways in the urban space," said the spokesperson for PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe.
The currently renovated tunnel connects Narwicka and Kochanowskiego streets in Gdańsk. Inside the tunnel are stairs leading up the Gdańsk Kolonia train station. Although unused for many years, the station has also been renovated. Same thing for the stairs which begin one meter above the ground. As it turns out, they will closed off with a grid so one will be able to use them.
"The Gdańsk Kolonia station is meant to preserve the history of railways in the urban space. The structure has not been serving passengers for over a decade now, but it will make life easier for local residents thank to the underground passage," a spokesperson for PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe Przemysław Zieliński said.
Renovation of a train platform no one will see
The renovation of the passage along with the unused platform was discussed with the city historic preservation officer and the designer. Zieliński explained that the entrance to the platform was preserved and original historic elements, such as the granite stairs, were renovated. The space between the stairs and the tunnel will be sealed with a grid.
He added that - in line with the historic preservation office guidelines - historic elements have been preserved. "Hence the necessity to renovate the stairs in their original form. The spokesman also said the sheds, entrances and the structure of the platform have also been renovated.
The first to report about the unusual stop was trojmiasto.pl portal, which also attached photos from 2008 that explain the one-meter gap between the stairs and the ground. More than a decade ago, there was another level in the tunnel, which now has been removed.
The tunnel is due to be opened in October 2021.
