Polish Sejm (lower house of parliament) on Thursday evening passed an amendment to the criminal code that would increase prison terms for paedophilia to up to 30 years.
The bill will now be directed to the Senate and then, if passed, to the president. In favour of the new law were 263 MPs, 3 were against and 3 abstained.
In the lenghty amendment to the criminal code drafted by the Ministry of Justice, the main changes regarding the fights against paedophilia assume prison sentences up to 30 years for child rapists. The most dangerous offenders may be served life sentences and the heaviest paedophile crimes will not expire. The changes also assume liquidation of suspended sentences for paedophiles. Furthermore, in the "paedophile register" the occupation of the offenders will be made public.
The age of legal protection against sex abuse has been left unchanged at 15. Most of the provisions, including changes to the criminal code are to become effective after three months from publishing.
