The United States Army Special Forces have opened a permanent base in Kraków. It's been named Camp Miron, in honor of Mirosław "Miron" Łucki, a soldier of the Polish special forces who died in 2013 in Afghanistan. The base will host between 150 and 200 American special forces personnel. It is the first permanent U.S. special forces base in Poland and the easternmost permanent U.S. special forces base in Europe. TVN24 reporter Marcin Kwaśny visited Camp Miron.
American soldiers assured our reporter that they highly value cooperation with the Polish special forces. "They emphasized that by being permanently stationed here, they will be able to conduct exercises and maneuvers much more frequently, the details of which cannot be disclosed," Marcin Kwaśny reported.
U.S. Army Special Forces Col. Harley Jennings said the base will be used as an operational base for American forces closely linked with Polish units, which are also located in Kraków.
The first permanent U.S. special forces base in Poland is located in Balice, a village west of Kraków. At the moment, it is full of containers.
"As both Polish and U.S. soldiers assure, it's less important how the buildings look. Crucial is scope of cooperation that is to be conducted. In the future, the shacks will be replaced by permanent buildings," Kwaśny said.
"Yet another U.S. military base in Poland clearly demostrates that the United States is very seriously committed to cooperation (with Poland) - not only military," Gen. Edward Gruszka, an advisor to Polish defence minister, told TVN24.
The general stressed that for the first time a battery of U.S. special forces has been deployed in Poland. "It goes without saying, it strengthens our security. On the other hand, it also shows how our closest ally approaches security issues."
The U.S. special forces has been named Camp Miron, as a tribute to Mirosław "Miron" Łucki, a Polish soldier who died fighting in Afghanistan alongside U.S. forces in 2013.
