The Regional Court in Włocławek has decided to place the mother of the 3-year-old Nikodem and her partner under arrest. The man has been accused of murdering the boy with extreme cruelty, the woman - of being an accomplice.
The boy died on Tuesday in a flat in the centre of Włocławek. The child was pronounced dead by a doctor, who later notified the police about marks suggestings that the boy may have been abused. The mother and her partner were detained on the same day.
The prosecutor's office launched an investigation and ordered a post-mortem. According to initial findings, severe internal and external injuries were detected.
Paweł S. and Agnieszka K. have both been charged.
Paweł S. was charged with murder with extreme cruelty. According to the prosecutor's office, the man was abusing little Nikodem both physically and emotionally, at least between June 21 and July 30. The man is said to have struck the child multiple times in various parts of the body with his hands and wooden object, as well as to have pushed the boy against the furniture. He is also said to have told the boy to stand straight with his hands up, verbally abused him and disregarded the child's begging to stop the abuse.
"On July 30, Paweł S. murdered 3-year-old Nikodem by acting with extreme cruelty that caused grevious internal and external bodily harm," the prosecutor said.
The mother was accused of negligence and not acting to protect her son, which facilitated the abuse of the boy by her partner. Her negligence on July 30 led to the child's death.
Both suspects are facing up to 25 years in prison or even life sentences.
