The District Court in Bydgoszcz has sentenced Dariusz R. for 15 years in prison for an attempt to kill his wife. The man has planted an explosive device of his own making underneath his wife's car. In the end, the bomb didn't explode.
Dariusz R. has set the bomb's clockwork to initiate after the woman starts driving the car. The explosion was supposed to happen within her 30-minute drive to work. On 12 June 2017, when the woman arrived at the school where she was working as a teacher, she heard a ticking sound coming from underneath the car. She looked and noticed that something was attached to the chassis. She called the police and a bomb squad removed the device.
In the substantiation of the ruling judge Andrzej Rumiński said that everything was going great in the marriage of Dariusz R. The accused had a baby with his wife and from his point of view, everything was idyllic, a sort of his own paradise.
"All of a sudden, his wife says: I don't want to be with you any more and I want a divorce. Such situation changes everything in the life of the accused. He's realising that the "paradise" in which he lived can cease to exist. Under these circumstances, the accused decided to kill his wife. He needed a perfect crime. On one hand he wanted her death, but on the other, he didn't want anyone to suspect him. The victim was supposed to lose her life while driving a car," said the judge.
Apart from the prison sentence, the court has put a restraining order on the accused. Dariusz R. cannot come closer than 50 metres to the victim for the period of 15 years (starting from the end of prison sentence) and must pay 10.000 zlotys compensation for the inflicted harm.
The sentence is not yet valid and can be appealed against.
